Zelenskyy’s peace thesis is that a ceasefire must follow, not precede, a stronger Ukrainian deterrent. He proposed NATO protection for Ukrainian-controlled territory, a US-EU arms package held in reserve if the truce works, and continued sanctions: “Don’t rely on his will… pressure him so that he is forced to stop the war.” For investors, that implies durable defense demand and sanction-driven energy realignment even after shooting pauses.

His skepticism comes from two failed security architectures: the Budapest Memorandum and the December 2019 Normandy ceasefire. Ukraine surrendered nuclear weapons for “assurances” that produced no consultations after its territory was violated; in 2019, the gas agreement and first prisoner exchange happened, but Zelenskyy said killing resumed within roughly a month. His warning against another “piece of paper” is that an unsupported ceasefire could be followed by renewed attacks within three months.

Zelenskyy wants negotiations sequenced as Ukraine and Trump first, Europe second, and Russia only after a common deterrence package is agreed. He believes Putin fears Trump but will exploit the limits of a four-year presidency, potentially rebuilding and returning in year five. Lex Fridman’s pushback remained consistent: even amid hatred, compromise and direct negotiation among Zelenskyy, Putin, and Trump are indispensable.

The military arithmetic in Zelenskyy’s account argues against Europe assuming Washington’s role quickly. He put Ukraine’s force at 980,000 versus roughly 200,000 for France, cited 12,000 North Koreans deployed with 3,800 killed or wounded, and contrasted Europe’s one million artillery rounds with North Korea’s 3.7 million for Russia. “Without Trump, without the United States of America, there will not be NATO,” he said, linking a weak alliance to wider European and Pacific risks.

His proposed funding loop turns frozen Russian capital and displaced energy supply into Western industrial demand. Zelenskyy suggested using $300 billion in frozen Russian assets for Ukrainian production and US weapons purchases—“We don’t need gifts”—while restricting Russian energy and replacing it with American oil and gas. The tradeable chain runs through defense manufacturing, hydrocarbons, air defense, infrastructure, and eventual reconstruction.

Aid-accounting and corruption are both political risk factors, but Zelenskyy disputed the premise that Ukraine received the headline appropriations as cash. He said roughly $177 billion had been authorized while Ukraine received less than half, mostly as weapons, and questioned costs retained by American transport and suppliers; domestically, he cited independent anti-corruption bodies, “99%” of required reforms, imprisoned oligarchs, and aggressive enforcement. The core risk is trust: “You lose trust, and with it, you lose support.”

Postwar Ukraine’s growth pitch combines digital government, tax reform, returning labor, and resource-backed foreign investment. Zelenskyy highlighted Diia, prospective deregulation, Black Sea oil, gas, solar power, gold, and what he called Europe’s largest uranium reserves, inviting US companies to invest rather than governments simply providing aid. The labor constraint is explicit—8.5 million Ukrainians were abroad—and peace is the gating event for both elections and rebuilding.
