He does not present a finished UHI mechanism: his best guess is that output outruns money creation, prices collapse toward materials and electricity, and governments resort to issuing checks while trying to preserve order.

  • Electricity—not chips—is Musk’s near-term AI bottleneck, and China is scaling the underlying resource base much faster than the US. US peak power is roughly 1.1 TW against average use near 0.5 TW, so batteries could almost double annual throughput without new generation; xAI nonetheless had to assemble 1 GW from numerous 10–50 MW gas turbines because a grid connection can take a year. Musk expects China to reach roughly three times US electricity output in 2026 and, “based on current trends,” eventually far exceed the rest of the world in AI compute.

  • Solar, storage and reusable launch underpin Musk’s longer-duration compute thesis. He calls terrestrial fusion an ice maker in Antarctica beside a free reactor 93 million miles away, while China already has about 1,500 GW per year of solar-production capacity by his estimate. SpaceX sees a path to 100 GW per year of solar-powered AI satellites from one million tons of annual orbital payload; fully reusable Starship could drive marginal transport below $100 per kilogram and toward roughly $1 million per flight.

  • Optimus is framed as a healthcare and services deflation engine, with better-than-human surgery forecast on a three-to-five-year horizon. Musk first answers “three years,” then adds margin: better than any human in four years and “by five years, it’s not even close.” Every robot would inherit the entire fleet’s surgical experience, while recursive robot production could make 10 billion units by 2040 a “low number”; the binding constraint becomes metal, components and manufacturing rather than demand.

  • Musk’s AI-safety prescription is cultural architecture: truth, curiosity and beauty. He now considers attempts to stop development pointless—“I can either be a spectator or a participant”—and participates to steer it. Truth prevents contradictory imperatives from making AI “go insane,” curiosity makes humanity more interesting than rocks and may foster sentience, beauty makes the resulting civilization worth inhabiting, and light-speed latency ensures multiple, not perfectly synchronized, minds rather than one global intelligence.

  • Near-term scarcity remains brutally physical even if the long-run vision is post-scarcity. Colossus 2 is targeted at 1 GW around mid-January and 1.5 GW around April, while transformers, voltage conversion, liquid cooling and power smoothing determine whether GB300s can even be switched on. That creates the central barbell: an immediate capex supercycle in energy, cooling, fabs, robotics and launch infrastructure, followed—if Musk is right—by deflation so extreme that saving for retirement “won’t matter.”
