1. Freedom outranks both money and survival
Durov traces the principle to moving from the Soviet Union to northern Italy at age four. Even a child could see the greater abundance of toys, ice cream, cartoons, ideas, goods, and services—but the deeper lesson was that without freedom, “you don’t get to contribute to this abundance.”
His operating diagnosis is concise: “The biggest enemies of freedom are fear and greed.” The practical defense is to imagine the worst possible outcome, become comfortable with it, and recognize that a shorter principled life is preferable to “a longer life, but lived in slavery.”
Mortality remains present without becoming paralyzing. Durov argues that death is never an experience within life—experience simply ends—so fearing it continuously wastes the time available; remembering “I can die any day” instead makes every day count and weakens threats from governments or intelligence services.
2. Short-term pleasure is treated as debt
At 11, Durov read his biochemistry teacher’s book, The Illusion of Paradise, and accepted its account of alcohol as damage to the brain, his “most valuable tool.” His broader framing is less biochemical than strategic: alcohol is a “spiritual painkiller” that suppresses an underlying fear temporarily, after which “you have to pay the debt with interest.”
Social drinking, in his view, exploits an obsolete fear of tribal exclusion. That instinct may have prevented starvation 20,000 years ago, but copying the modern majority creates no competitive advantage: “If you do the same thing everybody else around you is doing,” becoming outstanding is unlikely.
Durov applies the same logic to pornography, processed sugar, and diet. Porn is a surrogate exchanging energy for fleeting pleasure; sugar intensifies appetite, while an 18-hour fast and six-hour eating window impose structure. He stopped eating red meat about 20 years ago because it made him feel heavy, explicitly presenting that choice as personal to his metabolism.
His pill analogy is a helicopter warning light: a painkiller may silence the alarm without removing dehydration, poor air, inadequate sleep, or stress. He distrusts manufacturers whose incentives favor continuing dependence, but adds the important caveat that some diseases require antibiotics—his claim is overuse, “not suggesting we go back to the Middle Ages.”
3. Attention is the input Durov refuses to outsource
Durov rarely uses a phone beyond Telegram testing and historically kept mobile devices muted or in airplane mode. “I want to define what is important in my life”; a phone lets other people, companies, and notifications substitute their agenda for his own.
He may allocate 11 or 12 hours for sleep without sleeping that long, welcoming the time awake in bed as undisturbed thinking. Showering, exercising, and completing the morning routine before opening a device protects ideas; check the phone immediately, he says, and you become “a creature that is told what to think about for the rest of the day.”
Algorithmic feeds make everyone consume the same news, memes, and outrage. Durov’s alternative is to select a narrow field, actively search for relevant information, and remain consistent until becoming its leading expert; when reading news, he asks, “Who benefits from me reading this?” and estimates perhaps 95% is meant to induce a purchase, political commitment, donation, or war.
4. Action and voluntary discomfort manufacture energy
Durov says he normally does not experience depression and does not remember having it in the last 20 years, perhaps since his teenage years. He converts distress into execution: identify the problem, see a solution, and begin. His reversal of conventional motivation is, “You gain energy by doing something”—write a small piece of code or start the workout before waiting to feel inspired.
Every morning begins with 300 push-ups and 300 squats, followed by one or two hours in the gym five or six times weekly. Squats matter partly because they are boring: overcoming them trains what he calls “the main muscle,” self-discipline, and lowers the resistance to beginning difficult work.
Ice baths and Eastern European banya repeat the same payoff curve. Extreme heat and cold create several unpleasant minutes followed, in his telling, by hours or days of feeling better: “You have to suffer a bit.” He calls it alcohol in reverse—short-term discomfort with prospective long-term benefit rather than short pleasure followed by damage.
Long-distance swimming develops patience and stress resilience. His longest swim lasted five and a half hours in cold Finnish water and included getting lost; he has also crossed Lakes Geneva and Zurich. Beyond achievement, he argues that conditioning the heart and lungs improves the brain’s oxygen and glucose supply, making exercise part of productivity rather than mere appearance.
5. Telegram turns organizational scarcity into operating leverage
Telegram’s core engineering organization—backend, frontend, design, and systems administration—is about 40 people. Durov’s premise is that more employees often reduce output because “90% of their time” can disappear into coordinating fragmented responsibilities rather than building the product.
Underworked employees create a second-order cost: they remain paid while contributing little, demotivate productive peers, and may invent internal problems to manufacture purpose. Durov recalls cases where firing an engineer increased total productivity because that person had been creating more work than he completed.
Refusing additional hires forces automation. Telegram operates tens of thousands of servers—almost 100,000—across continents and data centers; manual administration might demand thousands or tens of thousands of people, whereas algorithms make the system more scalable, efficient, and, in Durov’s view, reliable.
Automation also supports geopolitical resilience: failed network segments can be bypassed without waiting for operators. “Humans are attack vectors,” Durov says, so minimizing human access and intervention improves both speed and security while reducing the organizational surface governments or attackers can pressure.
6. Privacy is architecture reinforced by sole ownership
Lex describes Telegram’s infrastructure as cloud-encrypted across jurisdictions, with decryption keys split among locations. Durov says that since designing Telegram around 2012, the goal has been to prevent any employee from accessing private messages, even if hired maliciously or compromised later.
His historical claim is categorical: “Telegram has never shared a single private message with anyone,” including governments and intelligence agencies. Durov also says there has never been a Telegram leak of private messages or contact lists; removing drives from a data center would yield encrypted, undecipherable material.
Asked whether future pressure might change that, he answers no: access would require changing the architecture, violating the promise to users. “We would rather shut Telegram down in a certain country,” making market withdrawal—not negotiated access—the stated response to an encryption mandate.
That position is credible partly because Durov owns 100% of Telegram and has no shareholders. He accepts losing one, several, or even nearly all markets because his lifestyle does not depend on extracting revenue from each jurisdiction: “I will still be doing my push-ups.”
7. Expanding state power is presented as privacy’s recurring threat
Durov sees privacy as a prerequisite for feeling free and protected, yet says its erosion usually begins with reasonable-sounding objectives: fighting crime, protecting children, or maintaining order. The danger is gradualism—exceptions accumulate until every message is monitored, assembly becomes impossible, and citizens discover they are helpless.
No dictator openly announces a plan to make citizens miserable, he argues; rights disappear through staged justifications. Lex’s corresponding observation is that bureaucracies expand without requiring one uniquely corrupt individual—the machine itself accumulates authority and forgets its original limits.
Durov reduces government to people pursuing ordinary institutional incentives: more influence, more subordinates, and more resources. The result can become an “endless loop” of rising taxes and regulation that suffocates free enterprise and speech, while clever legal phrasing turns constitutional exceptions into the rule.
He specifically points to European efforts to restrict encryption and refuses the premise that Telegram must remain for revenue. Governments often assume every technology company exists to extract value from their citizens; Telegram’s willingness to leave makes conventional economic pressure less effective.
8. France converted platform misuse into founder-level criminal exposure
Arriving in France for a two-day trip in August of the prior year, Durov says he encountered about a dozen armed police and a list of roughly 15 serious accusations. Authorities appeared to hold him personally responsible for crimes allegedly committed by some Telegram users—an approach he describes as unprecedented at this scale for a technology founder.
He spent almost four days in a windowless room with a narrow concrete bed while answering questions about Telegram. What struck him was investigators’ “very limited understanding,” or outright lack of understanding, of encryption, technology, and social-media operations; Lex calls the scene darkly Kafkaesque.
Durov argues a good-faith regulator had many conventional ways to contact Telegram and solve specific problems. Arrest sacrificed diplomatic escalation and sent a hostile signal to the technology community before testing whether the alleged operational issue could be resolved normally.
9. Telegram’s moderation record is central to its defense
Durov distinguishes private communication from publicly distributed harmful content. Telegram has moderated public channels for roughly 10 years and, for around eight years, published daily transparency figures covering child-abuse material and terrorist propaganda.
His stated scale is hundreds of CSAM- or terrorism-related channels removed daily. Counting accounts, groups, channels, posts, and other rule-breaking material, Telegram removes hundreds of thousands of items each day and millions each week, with machine learning and automation enabling the throughput.
Lex’s pushback to the French premise is that emotionally charged newspaper stories can obscure the denominator and existing enforcement. Durov says officials acted from anger generated by inaccurate input rather than data, applicable law, or an informed view of what the platform was already removing.
The rules themselves are framed as conduct-based: political opinion and peaceful assembly remain protected, while calls to violence, terrorist organization, child exploitation, and incitement to damage property cross the line. That distinction drives both Telegram’s defense and its conflicts with governments seeking broader political suppression.
10. The French process imposes costs before any trial
Durov is being investigated, not tried, under France’s investigative-judge structure. He experiences that judge as functioning more like a prosecutor, while the judicial title makes travel restrictions and other decisions harder and slower to appeal.
Telegram challenged the investigation itself, yet Durov says it had not even received an appeal hearing date. The slowness affects everyone, not just him; other entrepreneurs described investigations that paralyzed businesses before a higher court might eventually provide a remedy for unjustified or biased decisions.
Initial restrictions kept him in France; later changes allowed travel to Dubai, but not freely elsewhere. He says most restrictions have gradually been removed and refuses to let the remaining limits dictate his behavior: firsthand exposure to confinement made him “double down on defending freedoms.”
The threatened endpoint does not soften his position. Although he calls a 20-year prison term unrealistic, his hypothetical response is to starve himself rather than betray users: “I would rather lose everything I have than yield,” because submission would leave him “a shell of your former self.”
11. Durov alleges France tied leverage to election censorship
While unable to leave France, Durov accepted a meeting arranged by a well-known technology entrepreneur with the head of French foreign intelligence. He says the official sought removal of Telegram channels supporting a conservative Romanian presidential candidate or opposing pro-European candidates before the new presidential election.
His answer was that peaceful support, debate, and protest violated no Telegram rule: “We’re not going to start engaging in censorship in Europe, no matter who’s asking us.” He warned that using his confinement as leverage would produce the opposite response, then disclosed the meeting because he had signed no NDA.
The earlier Moldova episode sharpened his suspicion. Telegram received a short list, removed the few channels or bots that genuinely broke its rules, then rejected a second list containing dozens of lawful political channels. Durov says the French intelligence contact then reported that officials had spoken positively about him to his investigative judge.
That apparent connection between an unrelated foreign-election request and his French case was “extremely alarming.” Telegram’s position was not ideological: it also refused French police requests against peaceful far-left protesters and protected both Black Lives Matter organizers and anti-lockdown protesters during COVID.
12. Europe’s public sector is framed as an innovation tax
Durov’s high-level diagnosis is that European societies have not decided where government expansion should stop. France, despite its talent and culture, spends 58% of GDP publicly—possibly, he suggests, as much as or more than the late Soviet Union—leaving too few people creating products relative to those representing the state.
His first specimen is a French location-based social network with international organic growth. Durov advised its founder never to sell to Snapchat, but a prolonged data-protection investigation, repeated interrogations, and disclosure demands drained a young team already competing for talent and capital; the case reportedly ended without charges after the company had been sold.
Another French entrepreneur told Durov that an eight-year tax investigation had frozen corporate bank accounts; Durov says he believes the entrepreneur reported that duration. Authorities eventually concluded nothing was wrong. The original business died, but the founder relocated and built a successful Dubai company—transferring ideas, employment, and growth to the jurisdiction that let him operate.
France later offered that founder financing, tax relief, and a premium Champs-Élysées location to return. His answer was “Never”; the institutional trauma outweighed incentives. Durov’s macro conclusion is that unseen companies never created—or sold abroad prematurely—show up later as weaker growth, deficits, unemployment, and lost national capability.
13. Math and competition trained the builder’s operating system
At 11, Durov entered an experimental St. Petersburg school whose curriculum tried to overload teenagers across mathematics, Latin, English, French, German, optional Ancient Greek, biochemistry, psychoanalysis, and evolutionary psychology. Straight A’s were considered impossible; bored and searching for purpose, he used every break to achieve them anyway.
Mathematics mattered because it trains independent reasoning: divide a large problem into components, order them, work patiently, and retry when the first attempt fails. Durov sees the same mental machinery in programming, engineering, project management, and company formation—one reason many successful technology founders can code and handle mathematics.
His stronger educational call is that “competition is key.” Removing grades, rankings, winners, and losers may reduce immediate anxiety, but it redirects biologically rooted competition into video games and leaves students unprepared for harsher competition over jobs, customers, and promotions.
Lex preserves the compassionate objection: nobody wants children who struggle to feel unnecessary pain. Durov’s answer is that abolishing losers also abolishes winners and ultimately weakens whole economies; he contrasts parts of Europe with China, South Korea, Singapore, and Japan, whose more ruthless systems support scientific and technological competitiveness.
14. Nikolai Durov raised the family’s technical ceiling
Pavel calls his brother Nikolai “probably one in a billion”: reading at three, studying sophisticated astronomy by six, later winning three International Mathematical Olympiad gold medals and the ICPC programming contest twice, with two mathematics PhDs. As children sharing a bedroom, Nikolai served as Pavel’s pre-internet Wikipedia on galaxies, dinosaurs, black holes, and Neanderthals.
The quality Pavel emphasizes beyond raw ability is kindness. People who merely think they are intelligent often lack compassion; the genuinely intelligent, in his experience, are frequently modest and humane. Nikolai’s reluctance to seek publicity is an extension of that natural modesty rather than a communications strategy.
Pavel became more visible only after concluding that silence created a liability. A vacuum around Telegram’s founders let adversaries fill it with inaccurate narratives, potentially shaping events such as the French investigation; showing the people behind the privacy architecture became part of defending it.
15. Scarcity and subtraction produced VK
Durov started coding at 10 because he lacked enough video games. To dominate a five-in-a-row game played at school, he built a computer opponent looking four moves ahead; when five or six moves ran too slowly, Nikolai improved the algorithm. Pavel trained until classmates stopped playing: “I killed the game.”
At university, he built a student website containing digitized lectures, exam answers, forums, profiles, friends, albums, and blogs. It expanded across faculties and universities to tens of thousands of users before a former classmate showed him Facebook and asked whether he was building its Russian counterpart.
Facebook’s value was partly subtractive: it revealed which existing features to remove so a richer academic site could scale to millions. Durov warns that established users will praise complexity and request more, while new users need a product whose purpose is immediately legible.
Building Vkontakte from scratch, he followed Nikolai’s best advice: start with a module that merely logs in a pre-populated user and says hello. From that small proof came profiles, private messages, photos, and the wall; for almost a year, Pavel alone handled backend, frontend, design, support, marketing, and product copy.
16. VK’s scaling lessons became Telegram’s speed discipline
VK began on PHP, MySQL, and Debian Linux, then added Memcached and NGINX as load grew. Beyond 1 million users and roughly a dozen servers, Durov had to separate databases, shard tables without breaking the experience, and defend worsening DDoS attacks that curiously intensified around negotiations to sell equity.
When Nikolai returned from Germany around 2008, he and another two-time world programming champion rewrote search, targeted advertising, and messaging engines in C and C++. By 2009, Silicon Valley engineers, including early Facebook staff, were asking why VK loaded faster than Facebook even from California.
Telegram still treats speed as both experience and cost control. Users subconsciously notice even 50 milliseconds, while faster execution requires fewer computational resources; multiply a half-second opening delay by more than 1 billion people opening the app dozens of times daily, and Durov sees “centuries, millennia lost for humanity.”
That history drives aggressive deadlines. When an engineer requests three weeks, Durov recalls building VK’s first version in two and asks whether the task really requires three days; the pressure helps Telegram release several meaningful features every month but depends on unusually capable, focused people.
17. Hiring contests preserve A-player density
Durov argues that one weaker engineer can create hidden inefficiencies costing tens of millions of dollars while demotivating stronger colleagues. In roughly 90% of poor-fit cases, he sees the limiting factor as inability to focus deeply for an extended period—not laziness or missing corporate experience.
Telegram replaces résumé filtering with competitions built around real product problems. Repeat results create longitudinal evidence: a contestant might enter from age 14 or 16, compete 10 times, win eight, and demonstrate ability across JavaScript, Android Java, and C++ before receiving an offer at 20 or 21.
Because Telegram’s Android client is open source, a contest can ask candidates to implement a difficult animation or profile redesign. The company simultaneously discovers the best engineer and the best production solution, turning recruitment expense into development output.
Durov prefers talented Telegram users without big-company histories to applicants sourced from LinkedIn after Google-style employment. His objection is cultural: large organizations normalize shared responsibility, unclear credit, meetings, and “receiving a salary for nothing,” whereas Telegram expects one identifiable owner for each result.
18. Invisible interface craft compounds across a billion users
Telegram launched Secret Chat auto-delete in 2013, seven years before WhatsApp; Durov says later implementations initially copied even arbitrary timer intervals such as one, three, and five seconds. Replies followed the same pattern: a snippet, vertical line, and tap-to-highlight behavior became an industry template across WhatsApp, Instagram Direct, Facebook Messenger, and Signal.
The default chat background uses four constantly shifting colors, not a two-color gradient. Durov reviewed several thousand variants, balancing biologically resonant color choices, subtle vector patterns, infinite scalability, and rendering efficiency across the cheapest phones, tablets, operating systems, and screen sizes.
Deleting a message triggers a “Thanos snap” that dissolves it into tens of thousands of particles while neighboring messages simultaneously close the gap. Running those operations together avoids a slow, imposing sequence but requires redrawing the screen correctly across every message type, device, and context.
Lex frames the justification as cumulative joy: tens of millions delete messages every day, so even a 0.001% lift in mood could matter. Durov’s broader point is that care in subtle details can add value without distracting from communication—“People like when other people care.”
19. Vector animation makes expression lightweight at scale
Telegram introduced stickers three years and eight months before WhatsApp, but the deeper claim is technical. Its vector animations can contain 180 frames, run at 60 frames per second on old devices, and remain only several kilobytes—perhaps 20–30 kilobytes at most—so they start instantly rather than waiting for a GIF or WebM video.
Delivering that required competitions for people who combined artistic judgment with engineering fluency in curve-based graphics. The same stack supports custom animated emoji: a message can contain 100 moving emoji without crashing the device, an intentionally excessive demonstration of what efficient rendering permits.
Telegram uses the technology for reactions and concealed expressive features, including animations revealed through the send button. The product objective is that even adding a simple like should create enough delight that users want to repeat the action.
This intersection of art and engineering later became the foundation for Telegram Gifts: collectible objects designed for social display, lightweight animation, and blockchain ownership rather than isolated, static NFTs.
20. Hybrid encryption chooses between secrecy and cloud utility
Snowden’s 2013 disclosures reinforced Telegram’s decision to publish its client code and offer end-to-end-encrypted Secret Chats. Durov knew founders born in Russia would not automatically inspire trust, so users and researchers needed code—not biography—to inspect the claim.
End-to-end encryption carries product constraints: persistent communities of up to 200,000 people, huge one-to-many channels, high-volume bots, synchronized multi-device history, and recoverable large documents become difficult. Secret Chats additionally prevent screenshots and forwarding, useful against leaks but cumbersome for routine work.
Telegram therefore keeps both encrypted cloud chats and opt-in Secret Chats. The team itself “uses Telegram to build Telegram” and found the strict mode poorly suited to collaboration; users who distrust even Telegram and “only trust code” can choose the mode Durov calls the most secure popular means of communication.
Open source alone is insufficient if an app-store binary differs from published code. Durov says Telegram is the only popular messenger offering reproducible builds on both Android and iOS; much of its database, web-server, cryptographic, and backend-language stack is internally built, though Linux remains an unavoidable external dependency.
21. Snowden’s lesson was that trusted infrastructure can be compromised
Durov’s central takeaway is that “not everything is what it seems.” People presented as cryptography experts were, he says, connected to the NSA and promoted flawed standards, while a government believed constitutionally limited conducted surveillance on a scale citizens had not understood.
He interprets the post-9/11 response as a recurring imbalance: a legitimate threat prompts action, but government overreacts until “the cure is worse than the disease.” The institutional tendency is always to acquire more power at citizens’ expense.
Durov remains in occasional contact with Snowden and calls his disclosure brave and laudable, though they have never met and are not close. Asked which intelligence service frightens him, he says all can probably kill him; the meaningful variable is whether fear of death changes his behavior.
22. Russia and Iran turned censorship resistance into a product
By 2018 Telegram had around 200 million users and had become important to Iranian protesters and Russian citizens. Iran banned it after protest channels outpaced authorities; Russia demanded nonexistent universal encryption keys, received “If you have to ban us, ban us,” and initiated blocking that spring.
In Russia, Telegram automatically rotated through millions of IP addresses and organized “digital resistance,” letting engineers worldwide contribute proxy infrastructure. The company spent millions while censors blocked ever-larger subnets, accidentally disrupting banks, social networks, media, and even supermarket payments.
Apple then blocked Telegram updates worldwide for more than four weeks, saying it needed an agreement with Russia or exclusion of Russian users. After Durov publicly accused Apple of siding with censorship and The New York Times covered paper-airplane protests, approval arrived 15 minutes before his 6:00 PM deadline to abandon Russia and update globally.
