Morell’s injections could restore Hitler for critical meetings, but opioids also supplied confidence, euphoria, dependency, and eventually withdrawal; by September 1944, Eukodal every second day resembled a “junkie rhythm.” Ohler’s sharp summary is that “Hitler was really an opioid guy, while the army was really meth-ed up.”
Dunkirk illustrates how chemical effects interacted with bureaucracy, rivalry, and obsolete mental models rather than mechanically determining outcomes. The LSD history is a dual-use innovation story in which therapeutic promise, state secrecy, and institutional control repeatedly collide. Ohler traces Sandoz’s 1943 discovery through likely Nazi interest, the postwar American takeover of the research, CIA mind-control experiments, and Sidney Gottlieb’s attempt to control supply with $240,000 after American intelligence had estimated that Sandoz possessed 400 kilograms rather than 400 grams. Yet LSD failed as a truth drug: it might move people toward “their own truth,” while the episode repeatedly warns that a substance active at 250 micrograms can also overwhelm an unstable psyche.
Against the machinery of intoxication and command, Harro and Libertas Schulze-Boysen supply the episode’s counter-thesis: individual agency survives even inside a totalitarian system. Their 100-plus-person Berlin network recruited through trust, parties, and small tests of conscience, then risked execution to distribute more than 1,000 anti-Nazi stickers and pass intelligence. Ohler’s broader, more speculative Stoned Sapiens thesis extends that agency into human evolution—psychoactive plants might have widened cognition—but he repeatedly concedes, “There’s no proof.”

1. Weimar Germany split into competing cultures of intoxication
Ohler begins with a social map: Munich’s early Nazi movement emerged from beer halls, while 1920s Berlin consumed morphine, cocaine, mescaline, and ether. Economic collapse after World War I made the capital cheap, permissive, and hostile to the authority that had just lost the war.
Alcohol, in his framing, reinforced “us against them” group behavior; Berlin’s varied substances enabled more individual experimentation. The contrast is deliberately broad but memorable: drunk right-wing collectivism in Bavaria versus a diverse, queer, artistic counterculture in Berlin.
Lex asks whether Berlin’s drug use expressed rebellion, economic despair, youthful experimentation, or cultural discovery. Ohler keeps all four explanations, adding that the end of imperial discipline finally allowed young people to “find yourself maybe, or lose yourself.”
Goebbels called the capital “the hated asphalt reality of Berlin.” Once the Nazis took power, suppressing that reality meant disciplining not only political enemies but also forms of intoxication and identity the regime could not control.
2. Ohler’s New York and Berlin years shaped the questions he asks
Raised in West Germany, Ohler experienced divided Berlin as a forbidden, “walled-in city” that Westerners could visit and leave. He drove there as soon as the wall fell, then moved to the still-cheap, culturally unsettled capital during the 1990s.
Before Berlin, he lived in an ungentrified New York for roughly $300 a month, wrote his first novel, and first took LSD in Lower Manhattan. Kurt Cobain’s death followed by a cassette of Berlin electronic music felt to him like a paradigm shift: “Rock music with the hero on stage was dead.”
Reunification gave techno an institutional setting: abandoned East German buildings became meeting places for people the wall had separated. Tresor occupied a former vault, and Berlin joined Detroit as a techno center where music, drugs, architecture, and newly available freedom reinforced one another.
3. Beer supplied the Nazi movement’s first political technology
The Bürgerbräukeller was both a Munich beer hall and a right-wing political venue. Ohler argues that Hitler welcomed intoxicated audiences because alcohol made them more aggressive, more susceptible to populism, and more conscious of themselves as one group.
The 1923 Beer Hall Putsch followed a drunken night in which the movement decided, “Now we’re going to do it.” Everyone except the abstinent Hitler was drunk; sober Bavarian police stopped the attempt, and Hitler narrowly survived before writing Mein Kampf in prison.
Göring was shot in the stomach during the putsch and subsequently became dependent on morphine. Ohler uses that contingency to show how a failed, alcohol-soaked coup produced both the movement’s foundational prison narrative and one senior leader’s decades-long drug dependency.
Hitler’s abstinence increased his authority among intoxicated followers. He did not smoke, drink alcohol, or consume caffeine and presented vegetarianism as purity and superiority—an image that later concealed his growing medical dependence.
4. A drug lead opened archives that conventional indexing had hidden
The research began when Ohler’s DJ friend Alex insisted that “the Nazis took a lot of drugs.” An antique dealer had found old Pervitin in a Berlin medicine chest; after sampling the roughly 70-year-old tablets, the group described extraordinary energy, productivity, and a forceful bodily “push.”
An academic historian supplied the Freiburg archive signature for Professor Ranke, head of the Institute for Army Physiology. That unlocked a handwritten war diary, correspondence with Temmler, battle reports, production requests, and roughly 500 documents concerning military stimulants.
The obstacle was classification: an archive’s finding aid would list Ranke’s name, office, campaign, and dates, not “drugs.” Ohler calls the experience Kafkaesque—“History is just kind of lying there”—because neither researchers nor archivists know everything contained within a vast, partially organized collection.
Hans Mommsen’s reaction captured the historiographical gap: “We historians, we never do drugs. We don’t understand drugs. This, we missed this.” He considered the records a missing link in understanding Hitler’s later degeneration, while warning Ohler against turning that link into a total explanation.
5. Navy records shattered the myth of a clean military branch
The German Navy later portrayed itself as an ethical service distinct from the SS, but Ohler found records of Navy-sponsored experiments in Sachsenhausen concentration camp. The objective was a stimulant for crews operating miniature submarines underwater for seven days and nights.
The SS rented out a “shoe-walking unit,” prisoners already forced to test soles for German industry on a track reproducing surfaces across occupied Europe. Navy researchers added combinations of methamphetamine, cocaine, chewing gum, and other substances, then measured endurance.
The episode treats this discovery as more than a drug footnote. A supposedly professional institution converted concentration-camp labor, pharmaceutical experimentation, military procurement, and “wonder weapon” development into one operating system.
6. Nazi drug prohibition reserved intoxication for ideology
After taking power on January 30, 1933, the Nazis became an anti-drug regime because “the only intoxication they allow” was ideological intoxication. Early SA-run detention sites held drug users alongside political enemies before the SS industrialized the camp system.
Anti-drug and antisemitic policies converged in the image of the Volk as one body requiring purification. Jews, communists, independent thinkers, morphine users, and cocaine users could all be cast as poisons, with antisemitism remaining the defining pillar.
Hitler embodied the public counter-image: supposedly without private appetites, toxins, or even an ordinary body, he existed to lead the national body. Ohler nevertheless describes him as a “cake vegetarian” whose sweets and white bread caused severe digestive problems.
The contradiction was solved by classification. Molecules do not announce themselves as illicit, Ohler says; a government can condemn “drugs” while licensing the same pharmacological power as medicine, productivity aid, or military technology.
7. Temmler sold methamphetamine as German industrial performance
Ohler traces Pervitin to Temmler’s reaction to Jesse Owens’s dominance at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The company head assumed—without evidence—that Owens must have used American Benzedrine and demanded a stronger German amphetamine capable of restoring supposed Aryan superiority.
Chemist Fritz Hauschild found that a Japanese chemist in Tokyo had synthesized methamphetamine in 1917. Temmler’s chemists recreated and tested it on themselves, enjoyed the energy and talkativeness, patented it, and marketed the result as Pervitin in 1937-38.
Pervitin was cheap and available without prescription; Ohler says even a child could buy 10 packs of pure methamphetamine. It became normalized for business meetings and morning work because the category was “performance enhancer,” not dangerous drug.
Early university tests emphasized benefits: less fear, less sleep, reduced appetite, and prolonged performance. A psychologist related to Albert Speer raised the addiction, tolerance, and ideological objections around 1940, after widespread civilian and military adoption had already occurred.
8. Professor Ranke identified fatigue as the soldier’s primary enemy
Ranke’s assignment was to improve soldier performance, making him a military version of Q from James Bond. He concluded that the German soldier’s principal opponent was not French, British, or Russian manpower but fatigue.
His academy experiments began around 8:00 p.m. and compared Pervitin with caffeine, Benzedrine, and placebos. By 10:00 the next morning, he recorded that Pervitin subjects still wanted to party while caffeine subjects slept on benches.
Ranke urged the surgeon general to regulate the stimulant before the Polish campaign, arguing that civilian familiarity meant soldiers would bring it anyway. His superior ignored the proposal, and German forces invaded Poland without a unified methamphetamine policy.
After Poland’s defeat, Ranke collected reports from medical officers on actual Pervitin use and effects. Those field documents persuaded him that it was a “really good fighting drug,” giving him evidence beyond the controlled academy setting.
9. The Ardennes plan converted wakefulness into an operational requirement
Hitler’s desire to attack France was ideological and, in Ohler’s account, initially irrational. High Command considered the conventional northern-Belgium plan a repeat of World War I and contemplated a coup in November 1939 to prevent a catastrophic western offensive.
On February 17, 1940, three younger tank generals presented a different concept: compress the mechanized force through the Ardennes, an “eye of a needle” the Allies considered unsuitable for a major assault, and appear behind forces positioned in Belgium and along the Maginot Line.
Their conceptual break was to use tanks not as slow support vehicles but “in the front as race cars.” Success depended on reaching Sedan within three days and three nights, before the French and British could understand and reorganize against the penetration.
That no-stop condition gave Ranke his opening. He lectured officers, drafted a stimulant decree specifying doses, intervals, and side effects, and obtained 35 million Temmler doses; troops began taking them when the surprise offensive started on May 10.
10. Methamphetamine reduced fear before anyone knew how combatants would react
Ohler stresses the gamble: nobody had tested whether tank crews in enemy territory could fight coherently on methamphetamine. The entire operational package could have collapsed if crews panicked, became erratic, or exhausted themselves prematurely.
Reports described a depressed, fearful atmosphere immediately before the assault. Most soldiers were ordinary drafted men who expected disaster; after taking Pervitin, Ohler says, “you’re in a party mood,” and the social environment inside the tank became energizing rather than immobilizing.
Meth triggers a fight-or-flight state by releasing neurotransmitters associated with acute danger. In Ohler’s account, military structure channeled that arousal toward movement and combat: users felt alert, confident, sociable, and unusually enthusiastic about remaining with their unit.
Luck, spring weather, early victories, mechanized mobility, surprise, doctrine, and chemistry compounded one another. “The Blitzkrieg without meth is unthinkable” may be rhetorically compelling, but Ohler explicitly refuses to say the molecule independently created victory.
11. The same tempo advantage accelerated brutality
Conventional armies stopped at night; the meth-supplied German formations did not. Ohler contrasts them with French soldiers allotted three-quarters of a liter of red wine per man each day, making nighttime a structural vulnerability rather than merely a scheduling difference.
One report depicts Rommel’s division moving through a village at night and running over sleeping people, with tank tracks becoming bloody. Ohler calls that advance a war crime and a moment when the Wehrmacht “lost its innocence.”
His interpretation is psychological but not exculpatory: Rommel appears as a berserk figure, carried by speed, intoxication, and success rather than stopping to confront what had happened. The drug may help explain the state; it does not cancel responsibility.
Lex broadens the mechanism beyond chemistry: war, group pressure, dehumanization, and the desire to fit in can make ordinary young people participate in murder even without personal hatred. That is precisely why explanation cannot end with intoxication.
12. The responsibility dispute separates causation from culpability
Historian Richard Evans called Ohler’s work “crass and dangerously inaccurate,” morally dangerous because readers might infer that intoxicated Nazis were less responsible. Evans also argued that a single drug lens could crowd out strategy, doctrine, ideology, and human performance.
Ohler accepts the methodological warning but rejects the moral charge. Nazi policy and genocide were planned independently of drug intoxication; under the legal principle he discussed with his judge father, taking drugs while executing an already planned crime does not diminish responsibility.
His family example is deliberately painful: Ohler’s railway-worker grandfather saw Jews transported in a cattle wagon, recognized a regulatory violation, but did nothing because SS personnel were present. Ohler still considered that fear-based inaction culpable.
Lex preserves the ordinary-soldier problem: some 19-year-olds faced conscription or a concentration camp and then received Pervitin. Both men distinguish that compromised agency from the much clearer responsibility of leaders who designed the war and genocidal system.
13. Ohler’s prose creates both accessibility and amplification risk
Ohler began as a novelist and originally wanted to fictionalize Nazis and drugs. His publisher insisted that the discovered facts themselves required a nonfiction book, challenging him to use novelistic fluency while remaining “100% on the facts.”
He concedes that vivid prose can “overpower the reader”: five 19-year-olds feeling meth activate inside a tank makes the chemical explanation emotionally dominant. He even says the technique can “colonize the story” despite the source apparatus beneath it.
His defense is narrower than infallibility: “I invented nothing.” He accepts that historians can reasonably disagree over weighting, while maintaining that primary documents justify adding a previously neglected variable to the established military and biographical accounts.
14. Field records show concentrated distribution, not uniform intoxication
Heinrich Böll, later a Nobel Prize-winning writer, described in letters how Pervitin lifted his mood and made military work bearable. Such testimony supplies a human counterpart to the production, medical, and logistics records.
Distribution documents show the tank formations leading the breakthrough received the most Pervitin. Ohler could identify how many pills reached particular formations on particular dates, demonstrating planned concentration around operational need rather than indiscriminate army-wide dosing.
He nicknames Rommel the “Crystal Fox” because Rommel’s division received more meth than any other tank division. Yet the evidentiary limit matters: “Maybe he didn’t use it.” Ohler infers from behavior and unit supply but will not invent a personal dose record.
Lex adds another corrective: historians focused on systems can diminish the courage and suffering of individual soldiers. His Soviet grandfather’s experience makes him resist explanations that erase human action; Ohler agrees that the Red Army on the ground performed the decisive work of defeating the Wehrmacht.
15. Dunkirk exposed a clash between operational speed and command politics
The Ardennes “sickle cut” left British and French forces isolated in the north, with Dunkirk as their remaining port. German tanks were near enough to close the route when Hitler issued the famous Haltebefehl and stopped them.
Ohler interprets the order partly as generational lag: tank commanders were fighting a new mobile war, while Hitler still feared exposed flanks through a World War I framework. The meth-supplied formations could continue, but the supreme commander did not trust their apparent recklessness.
Göring introduced institutional rivalry. High on morphine, in Ohler’s telling, he warned that an Army victory would empower generals who disdained Hitler as a mere former corporal, then promised that the ideologically reliable Luftwaffe could destroy the trapped forces from the air.
The Luftwaffe failed to close the evacuation. Ohler calls Dunkirk Hitler’s first great mistake and cites von Manstein’s phrase “lost victory”; preserving Britain’s field army ensured it could regroup and remain central to the war.
16. Lex rejects the strongest Dunkirk counterfactual
Lex’s pushback—worth keeping—is that eliminating Britain’s standing army would not automatically conquer an island protected by the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force. An actual invasion still would have been exceptionally difficult.
He grants the narrower point: without its army, Britain would have been easier to neutralize, and Hitler’s relative lack of hatred for the British Empire supported the argument for neutralizing rather than invading Britain.
That disagreement models the episode’s best historical discipline. A decision can be a major error without proving the maximal counterfactual that Germany would therefore have conquered Britain or won the war.
17. Nazi victory required an impossible version of Hitler
Lex sketches a roughly “10%” speculative route: finish or neutralize the western conflict, avoid invading Britain, prioritize Middle Eastern oil, delay or reorganize the Soviet campaign, drive directly toward Moscow, and never voluntarily declare war on the United States.
Ohler thinks attacking the Soviet Union made eventual German defeat overwhelmingly likely. Germany’s comparative advantage was a short, surprising “speed war”; extended campaigning exhausted the advantages of speed and surprise and exposed Germany’s dependence on fuel and industrial resources.
Their deeper agreement is that a disciplined Hitler would not be Hitler. Ideological hatred generated the expansion while also producing enemy accumulation, irrational objectives, and operational interference: “National Socialism is a self-destructive movement.”
Ohler says Wehrmacht conspirators wanted to remove Hitler largely because he had become militarily ineffective, not because they opposed genocide. He also recounts Anthony Beevor’s suggestion that British intelligence abandoned assassination plans because a malfunctioning Hitler was preferable to a more competent military successor.
18. Opioids enabled long-term function while creating physical dependence
Ohler traces morphine to the 19th-century chemist Sertürner, who isolated opium’s active alkaloid. Combined with the hypodermic needle, it transformed battlefield medicine by enabling surgery, amputation, recovery, and return to combat.
Göring’s morphine dependence reportedly lasted from his 1923 wound until American capture in 1945—22 years of high-level functioning. Captors removed the morphine capsules he had with him, forcing withdrawal and producing the thinner Göring seen at Nuremberg.
Opioids differ from cocaine’s primarily psychological pull because receptors produce physical dependency and punishing withdrawal. Methamphetamine creates its own trap: days without it feel flat and depressed compared with chemically amplified performance days.
19. Morell won Hitler’s trust by curing an ordinary bodily problem
Theodor Morell ran a celebrity practice on Berlin’s Kurfürstendamm, serving performers and wealthy patients who wanted injections before demanding work. Ohler considers him knowledgeable rather than a simple quack, but unusually willing to provide hormones, vitamins, or opioids to anyone who could pay.
Hitler’s photographer Hoffmann introduced the doctor at a 1936 Munich dinner with Hitler and Eva Braun. The meal’s awkward spaghetti became Morell’s opportunity when Hitler complained that existing physicians could not stop his severe bloating and flatulence.
Morell recommended Mutaflor, a probiotic cultivated from the gut bacteria of a German soldier who had resisted illness in Serbia during World War I. It worked well enough that Hitler quickly regarded him as a wonder doctor and offered him the personal-physician role.
Morell’s outsider status became an advantage. Hitler distrusted imposing medical authorities, resisted undressing before them, and feared information he could not control; the physically unimposing, compliant doctor seemed harmless and kept their treatments secret.
20. A harmless injection ritual created the dependency architecture
From 1936 through 1941, Morell mainly administered vitamins and glucose. Ohler thinks the substances were mostly harmless and perhaps beneficial; Hitler remained fit, rarely became sick, and trained with an exercise band to hold his salute through hours of military parades.
The more consequential habit was procedural: Hitler preferred injections because pills traveled through his troubled digestive system and acted slowly. Morell could inject with little pain, and the daily shot became the signal that “the day was good.”
That ritual made the doctor indispensable before harder drugs arrived. Hitler’s first dependence was therefore not necessarily on a particular molecule but on immediate, private restoration delivered by one trusted person.
The arrangement also reinforced the propaganda façade. The regime displayed a disciplined, toxin-free leader while concealing a daily medical intervention designed to sustain the performance.
21. The viral image of Hitler tweaking on meth fails Ohler’s source test
Lex raises footage that appears to show Hitler rocking or “tweaking” at the 1936 Olympics. Ohler says the clip could be selectively edited, sped up, or simply capture an excited, naturally unusual man.
The decisive timeline is that methamphetamine was not yet available in 1936. “What is said here, on Hitler tweaking on meth at the 1936 Olympics, is definitely false.”
Morell’s records show only two meth administrations to Hitler. Vitamultin sweets beside his meals contained sugar and various supplements, but Ohler found no methamphetamine in any listed formula.
An SS doctor later claimed Morell secretly made meth-laced Vitamultin; Ohler finds no proof and thinks the account was invented. His compressed distinction is exact: meth was principally for soldiers, while Hitler preferred opioids and experimental hormonal products.
22. An August 1941 illness crossed the boundary from vitamins to opioids
Germany invaded the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941. Roughly six weeks later, Hitler became acutely ill just as he and High Command fought over whether to continue toward Moscow or divide forces toward Leningrad and southern oil.
Morell’s notes record Hitler effectively saying that “vitamins are not enough anymore.” Unable to attend the decisive briefing with fever and weakness, he received intravenous Dolantin, the strongest and fastest administration route.
The effect was immediate: Hitler rose, entered the room, dominated the generals, and confirmed the split rather than the direct Moscow thrust. Lex calls that diversion one of the Eastern Front’s largest blunders, though both men preserve uncertainty over whether taking Moscow was actually achievable.
Ohler’s personal analogy is a 1988 Michigan tennis match: an unknown injection erased his flu symptoms, and he beat a feared opponent 6-0, 6-0 by switching to high defensive lobs. The point is experiential—symptoms can vanish while the underlying illness remains.
23. Morell turned access to Hitler into a pharmaceutical empire
Between 1941 and 1943, Hitler and Morell became increasingly experimental, discussing hormones and animal-organ extracts. Morell simultaneously served as physician and CEO of Hammer Pharmaceuticals, with production in occupied Czechoslovakia.
After Germany occupied Ukraine, Morell demanded a monopoly on slaughterhouse organs. Military trains carried livers, hearts, and other offal west while officers complained that the same capacity was needed to evacuate wounded soldiers.
Hitler volunteered to be Morell’s “guinea pig”: if a pig-liver or hormonal preparation made him feel energetic, he could decree it legal and sellable to the military without ordinary test phases. Private treatment, state regulation, procurement, and commercial enrichment collapsed into one channel.
Ohler says the initially good-natured Dr. Feelgood became coercive and criminal, threatening officers with Hitler’s displeasure when they obstructed his raw-material trains. He describes Morell as a war criminal.
24. Eukodal converted situational rescue into regular opioid use
The opioid Hitler preferred was Eukodal, Merck’s oxycodone product. Ohler describes intravenous dosing beginning at 10 milligrams and later rising to 20, producing a “king’s high”: intense well-being, confidence, and clear thought rather than visible sedation.
A July 1943 meeting with Mussolini supplied the proof of concept. Hitler, furious that Italy might leave the Axis, initially refused to travel; Morell injected Eukodal, then gave another shot as Hitler praised its effect on the way to the plane.
Witnesses described Hitler talking for roughly two hours and leaving Mussolini almost unable to intervene, even when news arrived that Rome had been bombed. Hitler interpreted this pharmacologically charged domination as success, making Eukodal increasingly attractive.
By September 1944, Morell recorded Eukodal every second day—a “junkie rhythm” allowing a high, a recovery day, and another dose. The drug did not make Hitler incoherent; its danger was that chemically reinforced certainty could feel like superior judgment.
25. The July 1944 bombing added cocaine and destabilized the cocktail
Stauffenberg’s bomb on July 20, 1944 killed several people but failed to kill Hitler, partly because the heavy oak table redirected the blast. Hitler survived with damaged eardrums, internal injuries, shock, and more than 100 wooden splinters.
An ear, nose, and throat specialist treated the injury with liquid cocaine as a local anesthetic. Hitler quickly began requesting nasal applications and declaring, “Finally, I can think clear again.”
Cocaine intensified ego and superiority at a moment when the assassination attempt had made Hitler profoundly paranoid. Morell would then administer Eukodal, creating the stimulant-plus-depressant “speedball” effect associated with a late, unstable phase of addiction.
The ENT doctor and Morell fought for access in what Ohler calls “the doctor’s war.” The specialist allied with Himmler and questioned Morell’s hidden regimen; Morell, threatened by a rival who received more of Hitler’s attention, fought to preserve his monopoly.
26. Supply destruction forced Hitler to recognize his addiction
British bombing destroyed the Merck factory producing Eukodal in December 1944. Morell reportedly rode a motorcycle through ruined Berlin, going pharmacy to pharmacy in an unsuccessful attempt to secure the drug on which Hitler had become physically dependent.
In the bunker, Hitler shook, felt terrible, and received increasingly improvised substitutes, including harmine, an MAO inhibitor associated with ayahuasca. Morphine apparently remained available, but for reasons Ohler cannot explain, Hitler did not simply switch opioids.
Goebbels wanted Morell’s second bunker bedroom and told Hitler plainly that the doctor had made him an addict. In late April, Hitler finally accepted the diagnosis, fired Morell, and, according to some accounts, made him kneel while threatening him with a gun.
Morell escaped on one of the final planes, reached his Bavarian research laboratory, and began doing his taxes as the regime collapsed. American forces imprisoned him for two years; released in disastrous health in 1947, he was helped by a half-Jewish nurse and died soon afterward.
27. Eva Braun had agency, but the private record remains fragmentary
Ohler rejects the image of Eva Braun as merely a “dumb blonde.” She managed the Berghof, spoke with Hitler by telephone around 10:00 each night when he was away, filmed his relaxed interactions, and helped manufacture the image of a benign private man.
Early in Morell’s tenure, Braun asked to receive Hitler’s medications so she could remain “on the same wavelength.” Ohler finds no evidence that they became a drug couple; Hitler’s later poly-drug regimen far exceeded anything documented for her.
Morell recorded intimate bodily details, including scratch marks that might suggest rough sex, but Ohler refuses to inflate them into military causation. He suspects Braun eventually challenged Morell, yet says plainly that no record of those private conversations survives.
28. Harro Schulze-Boysen chose infiltration after the Nazis killed his friend
Ohler discovered Harro through a final prison letter found while researching Luftwaffe drugs. Harro told his father he had “a clean conscience” because he had done what he could to stop the madness, despite the suffering his execution would cause his family.
Before 1933, Harro published Gegner, “The Opponent,” believing adversaries could preserve democracy through open disagreement. Two months after Hitler took power, SS men destroyed the office, tortured the staff, and killed his half-Jewish friend Henry Erlanger.
The SS cut swastikas into Harro’s thighs. Rather than flee, he pursued a “march through the institutions,” joining the Luftwaffe Ministry and working upward until he could obtain politically and militarily valuable information.
In 1936 he tried to alert the BBC that Germany was secretly sending personnel to support Franco in Spain. The journalist, afraid to publish, buried the information—an early demonstration that possessing truth and converting it into action are different problems.
29. Harro and Libertas built resistance through intimacy and trust
Harro met Libertas on Berlin’s Wannsee in 1934 and immediately fell in love. He initially refused to undress because torture scars exposed the secret political life he had not yet learned to share; seeing them helped bring Libertas into his resistance.
Their network eventually exceeded 100 people across class and ideology: artists, workers, leftists, patriots, and professionals. Harro believed people could reach agreement across difference, even though fascism had taught him that argument alone could not defeat those claiming absolute truth.
Recruitment occurred at parties every second Thursday. The couple introduced a mild criticism of the regime and watched whether a guest engaged or quietly found another drink; personal intuition made the circle harder for the Gestapo to infiltrate than a doctrinal communist cell.
Music, dancing, affairs, and free love reinforced solidarity but also produced jealousy and operational risk. Libertas often resisted from instinct while Harro reasoned analytically, giving the marriage emotional force and recurring conflict.
30. Small acts of resistance mattered even when victory looked impossible
In May 1942, the group printed more than 1,000 adhesive notices answering the regime’s popular “Soviet Paradise” exhibition with “Nazi Paradise”—torture, hunger, and war. Pairs pretended to kiss against walls while attaching the messages throughout Berlin at night.
By morning, tens of thousands could see visible evidence that opposition existed. Harro did not know whether one gesture would ignite a wider break, but believed that if there were any possibility of becoming the spark, “I must try it.”
The group also passed military intelligence to Germany’s enemies. Harro rejected becoming a disciplined Soviet spy—he would help defeat Hitler but not “play your game”—yet accepted a radio transmitter whose Russian instructions proved difficult to operate.
A Soviet transmission exposed Harro’s name and address, either through staggering incompetence or deliberate betrayal. The Gestapo observed the network for months, then arrested and executed Harro, Libertas, and others; a secretary posing as Libertas’s friend extracted secrets that further broke the organization.
31. Stoned Sapiens treats human history as evidence-bounded possibility
Ohler’s planned world history starts from the proposition that every historical account is selected and therefore partly constructed: “historical science is basically a fictional science,” though a special fiction constrained by facts.
Recent Vietnam research illustrates the method’s corrective side. North Vietnamese generals rejected his language—“There’s no Viet Cong”—calling it an American propaganda term, and he continues investigating rather than asserting the unproven story that they deliberately supplied heroin to American troops.
The prehistoric chapters necessarily become more speculative. Ohler’s standard is not to claim proof but to ask whether psychoactive plants available along known human routes could help explain cognitive or cultural leaps that conventional histories acknowledge but cannot fully account for.
32. Khat and iboga supply hypotheses, not proven origin stories
Homo erectus lived around the Great Rift Valley, where khat—a plant stimulant still used near the Horn of Africa and Yemen—grew. Ohler explicitly says there is no proof Homo erectus consumed it; geographic coexistence merely makes the question investigable.
He links human endurance to the loss of fur and development of sweating. An antelope can sprint faster but must stop to cool down, while humans could jog persistently, turning sustained movement into an evolutionary advantage resembling the later military logic of chemical endurance.
At one point, he says, Homo sapiens may have fallen to roughly 1,500 people, making inbreeding and extinction serious threats. Consciousness and behavioral flexibility then became survival assets rather than abstract philosophical ornaments.
In Central African rainforest routes, humans could observe elephants eating iboga and behaving unusually. A Columbia researcher described iboga’s brain effects as being “everywhere at the same time,” a “spa for the neurons,” and “neurotechnology of the 22nd century”—provocative findings, not proof of prehistoric causation.
33. Trade, medicine, and altered states may have financed early culture
Crete’s Minoan development puzzled Ohler because archaeological displays showed remarkable buildings and art without explaining the economic leap. At a coastal site, he identified what he interpreted as a large Bronze Age harbor protected by a submerged wall.
Crete produced and traded olive oil, while opium poppies also grew there and opium functioned as uniquely reliable pain medicine. Ohler’s proposed mechanism is commercial: lucrative oil and opium trade financed cultural sophistication, making Europe’s first high culture partly a pharmaceutical-trade story.
Cave art supplies a different clue. Human work appears substantially more sophisticated than Neanderthal markings, and an Algerian image depicts mushrooms around a shaman; Ohler considers the possibility that sapiens incorporated psychoactive experiences while Neanderthals were “too sober for the future.”
34. Religion alternates between administering ecstasy and prohibiting competitors
Ohler presents Moses as a hypothesis developed by Israeli scholars: after fasting in Sinai, a traumatized fugitive encountered acacia containing DMT, saw the burning bush, and received a commandment—“You should not kill”—directly relevant to having killed a man.
He does not call the case proven. Its appeal is explanatory: fasting, acacia, isolation, a visionary experience, and a moral revelation resemble a psychedelic retreat, while monotheism could emerge from an overwhelming sense that one presence was speaking.
The wider pattern includes Jewish openness to intoxication, Christian alcohol, and Sufi ecstasy, alongside prohibitionist movements. Substances can validate direct religious experience or threaten institutions claiming exclusive control over access to the divine.
Germany’s Reinheitsgebot illustrates the latter. Presented later as beer quality control, the Purity Law removed psychoactive nightshade ingredients used in visionary brews and imposed water, hops, and grain—turning the church’s preferred intoxication into the legal standard.
35. Beer helped convert communal production into hierarchy
Ohler views Göbekli Tepe as a gathering site where a world population he places around one to four million could meet outsiders, reduce inbreeding, eat, celebrate, and reproduce without permanent residence at the site.
He says the complex functioned for roughly 1,600 years and acquired beer production after about 800. Once ritual centers controlled branded production and sale, as later Sumerian temples did, intoxicants became revenue, status, and administrative power.
Çatalhöyük, in his account, organized itself for about 2,000 years without kings. Gilgamesh and the Sumerian high cultures mark a later transition in which priests, beer production, surplus, and rulers began reinforcing one another.
Ohler extrapolates toward a borderless, egalitarian, “open source AI-assisted planetary society” with equal political rights and a minimum income. He presents it as a possible 50-year direction, not a near-term prediction, and identifies entrenched hierarchy as the principal resistance.
36. Ohler’s first LSD trip made perception feel radically contingent
In 1993, a girlfriend gave him a tab in Lower Manhattan. After an hour without effect, bathroom wall lines began vibrating; familiar people changed scale, apparent violence filled the streets, and he feared a switch had permanently broken in his brain.
He saw what appeared to be a killing followed by resuscitation and then a full racial riot, though he now suspects much of it was hallucinated. The experience felt utterly real and remained far stronger than later high-dose LSD trips.
After roughly 10 hours, normal perception returned. In retrospect, terror coexisted with liberation: matter appeared dynamic, everything seemed alive, and the supposedly objective world became recognizable as “just my conditioned perception.”
Ohler is not certain the substance was LSD rather than a rarer compound such as DOM. Experts told him a first psychedelic exposure can be unusually strong because the brain has never experienced such a dramatic reallocation of communication.
37. LSD’s effects scale sharply with dose and context
Ohler characterizes roughly 10 micrograms as a microdose, similar to a pleasant espresso lasting two or three hours; around 50 micrograms may intensify color, while a recognizable trip begins near 100.
He took about 200 micrograms on a Thai island and swam for roughly three hours, using the altered state for beauty and reflection. Lex recognizes the same amplification of beauty, gratitude, imagery, and autobiographical meaning from psilocybin and ayahuasca.
Mechanistically, Ohler says reduced energy in the default mode network lets normally separated brain regions communicate more freely. That can enable insight and neuroplasticity, but it can also produce overwhelming sensations the mind converts into hallucinated narratives.
A Zurich researcher told him LSD interacts with roughly nine receptor types versus about five for psilocybin, making it the “more sophisticated molecule.” Mushrooms usually last about five hours; LSD lasts around eight and acts in micrograms rather than milligrams.
38. Sandoz initially saw LSD as a mental-health platform
Albert Hofmann discovered LSD’s psychoactive effect at Sandoz in 1943. The company created an “intoxication room” in neutral Basel, close enough to hear the European war, where employees voluntarily tested the compound and documented laughter, sensitivity, insight, and well-being.
CEO Arthur Stoll saw potential for treating millions traumatized by war, particularly before modern antidepressants and antipsychotics existed. The commercial question was straightforward and unresolved: “What is it good for?”
Ohler’s personal route into Tripped began with research suggesting microdoses might counter processes associated with Alzheimer’s at 5-HT2A receptors. His mother had Alzheimer’s, and his judge father—who had once imprisoned people for drug offenses—asked why a promising substance could not be bought at a pharmacy.
On a mushroom microdose, his mother unexpectedly picked up a newspaper and read a headline after about a year of disengagement, encountering “Ukraine” as a new word. Ohler presents this as a moving family observation, not proof of treatment efficacy.
39. Nazi biochemical research likely fed the American LSD program
Stoll had studied under Nobel-winning chemist Richard Willstätter alongside Richard Kuhn, who later became Hitler’s leading biochemist, pursued nerve gas, and searched for a truth drug. Stoll and Kuhn continued corresponding after the Nazi takeover.
To access Stoll’s private Novartis files, Ohler gave the company archivist an LSD tab printed with Sandoz’s old logo. The gesture broke the resistance, and the archivist produced correspondence that had previously remained unavailable.
An October 1943 letter records Kuhn receiving half a gram of ergotamine, an LSD precursor, from Stoll. Combined with Dachau records of mescaline and an unnamed hallucinogen, Ohler concludes it is “highly likely” the Nazis also tested LSD—but the surviving document does not itself name LSD.
One Dachau prisoner described receiving a hallucinogen in coffee, seeing colors and fractals, and sensing something larger than the SS and the camp. The worst moment came when sobriety returned and he was again only a prisoner.
40. MKUltra converted an emancipatory molecule into a control project
After Dachau’s liberation, the American Alsos unit interrogated Kuhn, who cooperated to avoid prosecution. A senior American general then traveled in civilian clothing to neutral Basel and obtained early LSD from Stoll’s son in 1945.
The CIA’s 1947 creation moved the inquiry into “brain warfare.” Under Sidney Gottlieb, MKUltra pursued LSD as a truth and mind-control drug, continuing the logic of nonconsensual Nazi human experimentation without congressional authorization.
Gottlieb arrived at Sandoz with $240,000 to buy what American intelligence believed was 400 kilograms of LSD. Stoll corrected the quantity to 400 grams and sold the supply while accepting pressure to keep LSD a research compound rather than an ordinary commercial medicine.
LSD failed as a truth drug because it does not reliably make subjects disclose an interrogator’s truth. It may instead move users toward “their own truth”; one paid CIA subject, Ken Kesey, received $75 and later transformed psychiatric experience into One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Legitimate research continued until prohibition in 1966.
41. Psychedelic power makes blanket recommendations irresponsible
Lex generally tells unknown listeners “no” when asked whether they should try psychedelics, despite positive experiences with psilocybin and ayahuasca. A journey that heals one person might expose another to destabilizing material they cannot integrate.
Ohler agrees that recommending LSD without knowing the person would be irresponsible. At 250 micrograms it can “totally overpower you,” even though Ohler describes LSD as non-toxic; psychological instability, dose, setting, and expectations materially alter the risk.
The substances are not interchangeable. Ohler describes LSD and psilocybin as close pharmacological “cousins,” while saying iboga appears to work differently across the brain; the discussion does not establish a full comparison with ayahuasca.
42. Personal drug experience informed Ohler’s history without replacing evidence
Berlin’s 1990s clubs gave Ohler MDMA-fueled nights in which roughly 500 people might dance for eight hours to genuinely new electronic music. He participated intensely for about two years, often from Friday through Monday, before recognizing that the rhythm made sustained work impossible.
While writing Blitzed, he obtained crystal meth to understand the bodily state inside a tank. The dealer unexpectedly included a photocopy of Pervitin’s 1938 patent, combining illicit supply with historical literacy.
Ohler found meth physically stressful—pounding heart, elevated blood pressure, a toxic load on the central nervous system—and mentally less interesting than LSD. It produced wakefulness and confidence rather than the radical perceptual reorganization of a psychedelic.
He insists experience is supplementary: taking a substance can sharpen descriptive intuition, but dates, dosages, institutional claims, and causal conclusions still require documents. “Write drunk, edit sober” becomes a broader rule for separating insight from verification.
43. Drugs can accelerate writing, but they cannot choose the right direction
Kerouac’s On the Road is, for Ohler, an “amphetamine book”: reportedly written in two weeks on a continuous paper roll, its form embodies speed, movement, and refusal to stop. Philip K. Dick likewise used amphetamines, while Hemingway and Malcolm Lowry worked through alcohol.
The advantage is output—Ohler says amphetamines might yield 20 pages quickly. The risk is lowered self-criticism: a writer can travel very fast down the wrong track and discover that 200 confident pages must be discarded.
Ohler does not write finished prose on LSD. He uses altered states for architecture and perception, then sober discipline for sentences; during one mountain trip he mentally tested Stoned Sapiens’s chapters and newly appreciated cave walls as living geological canvases.
His actual writing refuge is Nietzsche’s house in Sils-Maria, where he leaves the phone off and works near the room occupied by Nietzsche from 1882 to 1888. The place supplies clarity that drugs would disrupt.
44. Literature and resistance both widen the space of possible thought
Ohler treats writing as neuroplastic intervention: a good book changes what readers notice and loosens conditioned responses. That was his teenage political ambition and remains his preferred form of resistance, even if an organized revolutionary cell might dismiss it as insufficient.
His stylistic lineage includes Joyce’s Ulysses for formal possibility, Camus’s The Stranger for eliminating the unnecessary, Nietzsche for chiseled aphorism, Kafka and Thomas Mann, and Pynchon’s Gravity’s Rainbow for unmatched intensity.
Harro’s underground network and Ohler’s books operate at radically different levels of danger, but Ohler sees a shared refusal to repeat the prescribed pattern. “Dancing can be a form of resistance” because freedom begins when bodies and minds stop moving only as authority instructs.
45. The episode ends with meaning as participation in a larger story
Ohler’s answer to the meaning-of-life question is deliberately experiential: the universe is telling “a big story,” human consciousness participates in it, and individual meaning lies in becoming more capable of perceiving the connections.
On LSD in the mountains, minerals, atmosphere, cosmic energy, paths, weather, and time felt less like separate categories. He could not translate the perception into a final proposition, but calls that openness inspiration rather than doctrine.
Mathematics, art, history, and other disciplines can approach the same edge when a person senses a structure before expressing it formally. The goal is not permanent intoxication; it is to escape the “boxed human” long enough to understand more and connect differently.
Ohler hopes Stoned Sapiens and its accompanying Substack can “free the brainwaves.” His final hedge matters as much as the ambition: what the larger story ultimately is, “I don’t know,” but moving toward broader understanding is the work.
